Peter Randall-Page at Jerwood Sculpture
15 February 2010
The Jerwood Foundation and Jerwood Sculpture are delighted to announce the launch of the latest addition to the Jerwood Sculpture Collection at Ragley Hall, a large scale piece by internationally acclaimed artist Peter Randall-Page.
Green Fuse, as the piece is entitled, is made from solid granite quarried from the Du Lank quarry in Bodmin Moor. Randall-Page took over a year to carve the piece and had to use special cutting equipment to work this difficult material. Green Fuse stands at over 6 metres tall and weighs over 14 tonnes.
The title Green Fuse refers to Dylan Thomas' poem ‘The force that through the green fuse drives the flower' and reflects Peter's preoccupation with nature: ‘my work is informed and inspired by the close observation of form and pattern in the natural world... the intricacy and perfection of growth... My aim is to evoke something of the complexity of theme and variation we find in nature'.
Randall-Page's work is the 21st sculpture to join the collection. It is Jerwood Sculpture's largest and most significant commission to date and Green Fuse stands in pride of place at the summit of the main axial avenue in the parkland at Ragley.
